Before GoPro became the widely-known Kleenex™ of action cameras, there was Contour. As the leader of the product team, I had the privilege of being involved in every aspect of the product's and brand's development. I worked hands-on through everything from camera firmware to designing the user experience for the web and connected mobile apps on iOS and Android. The Contour camera not only won a Red Dot design award but was also one of the first wearable, connected, GPS-enabled action camera platforms.
(Product testing on powder days wasn't a bad perk either 🏂 ;-).
Connected native apps + video
The Contour Action Camera had no screen and only 3 buttons. While a host of resolutions, framerates, photo/timelapse modes, etc. were available, it took mounting the camera as a drive on a computer to change any of the settings. A non-starter for most novice and pro users in the field. Working with athletes and Contour customers, I led the design of the Contour iOS and Android apps for remote control, changing settings, GPS status, and one of the first connected real-time viewfinders for an action camera. This also required a massive update to the camera firmware. Working with newly hired in-house firmware engineers I mapped out camera functions, audio and LED feedback on-device and the complementary functions on the connected apps.
